Situated 5Kms from Jodhpur, Balsamand lake is a popular picnic destination. It was constructed by rulers of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty in 1159AD, as a water reservoir to supply water to Mandore. The lake sprawls over one kilometre in length, has a breadth of around 50metres and is 15metres deep.

The Balsamand lake palace was constructed later by Maharaja Sur Singh as a summer resort on the banks of the lake.
